Dentures Q&A

What are dentures?

Dentures replace lost teeth. They’re made using acrylic resin or a combination of acrylic resin and various metals for strength.

Partial dentures fill in gaps and maintain spacing, while complete dentures replace every tooth in your top or bottom arch. You can get complete dentures for both your top and bottom arches if you have no natural teeth left.

Dentures are removable, and you typically need to take them out for cleaning daily. Many denture-wearers soak their dentures while they sleep. When dentures fit properly, they’re stable. But, gradual bone and gum tissue loss often lead to loose dentures.

While denture adhesive can help, denture relining is usually needed every few years. In a denture reline, the soft lining of the dentures is replaced to improve fit.

Allan D. Schulman, DDS, LLC, also offers a denture/dental implant hybrid called All-on-4.

How long does it take to get dentures?

The time frame for dentures at Allan D. Schulman, DDS, LLC, is usually about a month, in which time you’ll have five appointments. If you need extractions, the process takes longer because you need time to heal.

To make your dentures, Dr. Schulman takes an impression of your jaw and then takes specific measurements. He sends the impressions and measurements to the dental lab where they’ll make your new dentures.

Typically, the dental lab sends a “try-in” wax mold back to the Allan D. Schulman, DDS, LLC, office before making the dentures. That allows Dr. Schulman to note any necessary adjustments before the lab fabricates your new dentures.

What is All-on-4?

All-on-4 is a tooth-replacement system that’s mainly dentures, with some help from a few dental implants. All-on-4 might be right for you if you’ve lost all top teeth, bottom teeth, or both. In each arch, you have a full set of dentures with four dental implants permanently retaining it.

You’ll have two anterior implants, which are positioned around where your natural canines are, and two posterior implants, which are angled around where your natural molars are. The dental implants retain your whole custom-made tooth arch, which means permanent tooth replacement without needing full-mouth dental implants.
