Emergency Dentistry Q&A
Dental emergencies are often the result of injury, accident, or infection. Some common dental emergencies include:
- Loose tooth
- Broken tooth
- Knocked-out tooth
- Severe tooth pain
- Serious mouth bleeding
- Severe mouth swelling
- Abscess
There are also other situations that could be dental emergencies. If you’re unsure, just call the office of Allan D. Schulman, DDS, LLC, for guidance.
When a tooth is knocked loose, that doesn’t always mean it’s truly lost. Immediately pick your tooth up, touching just the crown, and rinse it off with cool water if needed. Replace the tooth in its proper place (or as close as possible). You can use your tongue to help hold the tooth in place if needed.
If you can’t put the tooth back in the socket, pour a cup of regular milk and submerge the tooth in that. It’s important to keep the tooth moist. Either way, you need to call the office of Allan D. Schulman, DDS, LLC, immediately. You generally have around an hour from the time the tooth left the socket to get it reimplanted successfully, so get to the office quickly.
Although not every dental emergency is preventable, there’s a great deal you can do to protect your family’s oral health. Some good protection tips include:
- Wear a mouthguard during sports
- Don’t chew on super-hard foods
- Don’t bite your nails
- Don’t tear anything with your teeth
As your children grow, teach them the same habits so you can reduce your whole family’s chance of a dental emergency.
Allan D. Schulman, DDS, LLC, is calm and caring in the face of dental emergencies. When you need help for any member of the family, call the office to get help fast.
